  • 3 islands
  • 4 ferries
  • Fly into Athens

Facts checked 14 September 2026

Ten days across Sifnos, Folegandros and Ios trades speed for depth: longer stays on quieter islands, with every crossing between the islands 2 hours or less. This route suits travellers who’d rather properly settle into three places than rush through five.

Days 1-4: Sifnos

Land in Athens and take the ferry to Sifnos (2.5 to 5 hours depending on the boat). Four nights is enough to properly explore: the fortified hilltop village of Kastro, the pottery workshops around Vathy and Herronisos, and the network of old monopati trails linking villages across the island’s interior.

Days 5-7: Folegandros

A crossing of about 2 hours takes you to Folegandros, one of the smallest and least developed islands in the Cyclades. Chora’s main square, perched dramatically on a clifftop, is the centrepiece: spend evenings there and days on the short walk down to Agali beach.

Days 8-10: Ios

The final leg is the shortest: under an hour on the fastest boats, which call at Sikinos on the way to Ios. After two quiet stops, Ios brings more energy: a lively harbour town, a long sandy stretch at Mylopotas beach, and a nightlife scene that’s more active than anywhere else on this route.

The way back

From Ios you sail back to Piraeus (about 3.5 hours on a fast boat, around 7 on a conventional ferry, with daily departures) and take your return flight from Athens. As with any Cyclades route, book that last ferry a day ahead of your flight to leave room for a delay.

This route pairs well with the classic Cyclades route for a longer trip, since Naxos and Paros sit on the same ferry network as all three islands here.

Frequently asked questions

Is this route slower-paced than the classic Cyclades route?

Yes. With 4 and 3 nights per island instead of 2-3, you settle in properly on each stop. All three islands are also quieter and less built-up than Naxos, Paros or Mykonos.

Which island on this route has the best nightlife?

Ios, by a clear margin. It has a livelier bar scene than Sifnos or Folegandros, though it's calmer outside July and August than its old party-island reputation suggests.

Do you need a car on Sifnos or Folegandros?

Not strictly. Sifnos has a reliable local bus connecting its villages, and Folegandros is small enough to explore on foot from Chora. A car adds convenience but isn't essential on either island.
