Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, which makes it feel surprisingly calm even in high season. The capital, Chora, has a compact castle village with narrow lanes, while the coastline toward Plaka and Agios Prokopios offers miles of sandy beach. The capital, Chora, is the most practical base: plenty of restaurants, a lively harbour and short distances to the first beaches. Anyone who’d rather stay right on the sand should pick Agios Prokopios or Plaka, both a short bike ride from Chora but with a quieter character.
Exploring the interior
A rental car is worth the investment. The road to Apeiranthos, a marble mountain village with narrow lanes and its own dialect, winds past olive groves and abandoned Venetian towers. Halki, once the island’s economic centre, has beautifully restored mansions and the historic Vallindras distillery, home to Naxos’s own citrus liqueur, kitron.
Practical tips
