About Santorini

Santorini was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, and the caldera it created is world-famous. Fira and Oia offer the well-known white houses with blue domes perched on the crater rim, looking out over the water to the still-active volcanic islet of Nea Kameni.

The island is the busiest in the Cyclades, most noticeably around sunset in Oia. Anyone who looks beyond the main towns will find quieter villages like Pyrgos and the black beach of Perissa, with a very different, more authentic character.

Tips

  • Watch the sunset from Pyrgos or Akrotiri instead of the overcrowded Oia.
  • Visit the Akrotiri excavation, a well-preserved Minoan settlement.
  • The black beaches at Perissa and Kamari are quieter than the caldera side.
  • Book a boat trip to the Nea Kameni volcano and the hot springs.
