Choose Zakynthos for a compact beach holiday built around boat trips, the Navagio viewpoint and a lively evening scene. Choose Kefalonia for a bigger, quieter island with dramatic scenery that you explore by car. With ten days or more, combine them: a seasonal ferry links the two.

Zakynthos and Kefalonia are neighbours in the southern Ionian Sea, both reachable by direct summer flights from much of Europe, and both famous for blue water under white cliffs. People search “Zakynthos or Kefalonia” because the photos look alike. The holidays they offer are quite different.

Beaches

Zakynthos is built around its coastline. Navagio, a cove with a rusting shipwreck on white sand below sheer cliffs, is the island’s icon; the beach and cove have been closed since a 2018 rockfall (current rules run to 31 October 2026), so you see it from the clifftop viewing platform. Laganas Bay in the south is a long sandy bay and a protected nesting area for loggerhead turtles, which means restrictions on sunbeds, boats and night-time access on some beaches. Gerakas and Dafni are quieter turtle beaches; Tsilivi and Alykanas in the north-east have easy family beaches.

Kefalonia has fewer resort beaches and more dramatic ones. Myrtos, a long white-pebble beach under high cliffs on the north-west coast, is the most famous view on the island. Antisamos near Sami has clear water framed by green hills. Petani and Xi on the Paliki peninsula offer contrast: Petani is pebbly under cliffs, Xi has reddish sand. Because the island is large, even in August you can usually find a beach that is not packed.

Verdict: Zakynthos for boat-access icons and easy resort sand; Kefalonia for variety and space.

Things to do

On Zakynthos:

  • A boat trip along the north-west coast to the Blue Caves and Navagio viewpoints.
  • Turtle-spotting trips in Laganas Bay, choosing operators that keep their distance.
  • Sunset at Keri lighthouse or the Agios Nikolaos viewpoint above Navagio.
  • The mountain villages around Volimes and Anafonitria.

On Kefalonia:

  • Melissani cave, an underground lake lit by sunlight through a collapsed roof, best around midday.
  • Drogarati cave, a large cavern with stalactites.
  • Fiskardo, a harbour village that kept much of its older architecture after the 1953 earthquake.
  • Wine tasting in the Robola region and a drive or hike on Mount Ainos.

Getting around

Zakynthos is small enough to base in one resort and use taxis, buses and organised boat trips. A car for two or three days lets you see the west-coast viewpoints and villages. Kefalonia is a different scale: the drive from Argostoli to Fiskardo takes over an hour on winding roads, and public transport is limited. Rent a car for the whole stay. See Do you need a rental car?.

Nightlife and atmosphere

Laganas is the island’s party strip and attracts a young crowd; the rest of Zakynthos is far calmer. Kefalonia has no real party scene. Evenings mean harbour dinners in Fiskardo, Assos or Argostoli, which suits couples and families looking for quiet.

Cost and season

Both islands are busiest and most expensive in July and August, when car rental also peaks. Late May, June and September give warm sea, open businesses and lower prices. The Ionian is calmer than the Aegean in summer because it is sheltered from the meltemi wind, but exposed west-coast beaches can still have waves on windy days.

Combining the two

A seasonal ferry runs between the north of Zakynthos and Pesada on Kefalonia’s south coast, mostly in summer. Check the current timetable before planning, because it does not run all year. A good ten-day plan is four nights on Zakynthos and six on Kefalonia, adding a day trip to Ithaca from Sami. See Kefalonia to Ithaca by ferry and the Ionian islands 10 days route.

Who should choose which

  • Four or five days, beach first: Zakynthos.
  • A week of driving, views and quiet villages: Kefalonia.
  • Families wanting a resort base: Zakynthos (Tsilivi) or Kefalonia (Lassi or Skala).
  • Groups wanting nightlife: Zakynthos.
  • Couples: Kefalonia, especially Fiskardo or Assos.

The bottom line

Zakynthos is the easier, more compact choice for a beach and boat holiday. Kefalonia is the bigger, quieter island that rewards a car and more days. If you are torn, think about pace: if you want to stay put, choose Zakynthos; if you want to explore, choose Kefalonia. Also compare Corfu vs Kefalonia and Corfu vs Zakynthos.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Picking Zakynthos only for Navagio. The famous viewpoint and boat trips are one day; make sure the rest of the island suits you too.
  • Underestimating Kefalonia’s size. Basing yourself in one corner and planning daily drives to the other end turns the holiday into a road trip you didn’t plan.
  • Booking Laganas for a quiet holiday. The strip is lively late into the night in summer.
  • Not booking a car early. In July and August, rental cars on both islands can sell out.
